A native bee box made from hoop pine is a suitable choice for relocating and providing a home for Australian native bees. Hoop pine (Araucaria cunninghamii) is a native Australian tree species that is commonly used for woodworking due to its durability and suitability for outdoor applications.

When constructing a native bee box, it’s important to consider the specific requirements of native bees.

  1. Assemble the box: Use nails or screws to join the boards together, forming a rectangular box. Ensure the joints are secure and sturdy.
  2. Create bee entrance holes: Drill small holes into one side of the box to serve as entrance holes for the native bees. The holes should be approximately 5/16 to 3/8 inch (8 to 10 mm) in diameter. Place the holes near the bottom of the box, allowing the bees to access the interior easily.
  3. Optional: If you want to provide additional protection and insulation, you can attach a roof or cover to the box. This can be done by attaching another piece of hoop pine or using other materials like corrugated plastic or metal.
  4. Mounting the box: Place the native bee box in a suitable location. Native bees prefer sunny spots with some shade, so consider placing the box in a garden, near flowering plants, or on a sturdy post.
